View Similar Promotions in the Bump Chart

View similar promotions in the Bump Chart when creating a new promotion.

Overview

The Bump Chart feature within Vividly's promotion creation and editing workflow provides real-time access to historical point-of-sale (POS) performance data for the specific customer and product group you're currently planning a promotion for, allowing you to make data-driven decisions about lift assumptions, pricing strategy, and expected volume without leaving the promotion editing screen. When you're creating or editing a promotion in the Master Edit interface (Step 2 of the promotion planning process), the Bump Chart displays a visual timeline of past promotional events alongside key metrics including base units sold, incremental units generated, average retail price, promotional lift percentages, and compliance rates—all filtered automatically to match the exact customer and product group combination of your current promotion.

Steps to Find the Bump Chart

  1. Navigate to Promotions > Planning in Vividly.

  2. Access the creation or editing (Master Edit) process pages.

    • Option A - Creating a new promotion:

      • Click the "+ New Promotion" button or similar.

      • Enter basic promotion details in Step 1: Customer, Product Group, Start Date, End Date, Promotion Type/Fund Type.

      • Click "Next" or "Continue" to proceed to Step 2 (Master Edit page).

      • Click on the promotion to open it.

      • Click "Edit" to enter edit mode.

      • Navigate to Step 2 of the editing workflow (if not already there).

  3. You should now be on the Step 2 / Master Edit page where you configure promotion lines, lift, pricing, and volume details.

  4. On the Step 2 / Master Edit page, you'll see the main promotion configuration area, scroll down past the main promotion configuration area to encounter two key sections:

    • "Similar Promotion Lines": A table showing past promotions with the same customer, product group, and fund type.

    • "Bump Chart": The visual analytics section (this is what we want to access).

  5. Locate the "Bump Chart" section header and click on it to open this section.

  6. The Bump Chart will load and display automatically all the data related to the similar promotions.

Understanding the Bump Chart layout

Top Section - Compliance Metrics

    • The top section shows compliance over time as a line or area chart. Compliance = Promoted TDPs ÷ Total TDPs (what percent of your distribution actually executed the promotion)

    • What to look for:

      • High compliance (90%+): Most stores ran the promotion as planned (good).

      • Low compliance (50% or below): Many stores didn't execute properly (issue to investigate).

    • Hover over different points on the compliance chart to see exact percentages for specific dates.

Middle Section - Standard Bump Chart

    • The middle section is the core bump chart visualization showing:

      • Blue area chart: Base units/sales (baseline sales without promotional lift)

      • Light purple/pink area chart: Incremental units/sales (additional sales generated by promotions)

      • Green line: Average retail price (ARP) (the shelf price over time)

Bottom Section - Promotion Boxes
  • The bottom section displays promotion boxes representing each past promotion. Each box shows:

    • The width of the box represents the duration of the promotion (start date to end date).

    • Short box: 1-2 week promotion.

    • Long box: 4-8 week promotion or longer.

    • Boxes are color-coded (colors may vary) and labeled with promotion names or IDs.

  • Hover over a box to see: - Promotion name - Start date and end date - Fund type (MCB, Scan, Slotting, etc.) - Any other promotion details.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Always check the Bump Chart before finalizing lift assumptions: Historical data is far more accurate than guesswork.

  • Look for patterns across multiple promotions: If all past promotions with an ad generated 50%+ lift while those without ads generated 30% lift, the pattern is clear.

  • Use compliance data to hold retailers accountable: Share low-compliance Bump Charts with buyers to drive better execution.

  • Document insights in promotion comments: After reviewing the Bump Chart, add comments to your promotion noting key insights (e.g., "Based on March 2024 promotion, expecting 45% lift at $4.50 ARP").

  • Combine with Similar Promotion Lines table: Use both the table (for ROI data) and the Bump Chart (for lift/compliance) together for complete insights.
